1. Festa di San Sisinnio: The August Equestrian Pilgrimage
The premier religious and folkloric celebration in Villacidro is the Festa di San Sisinnio, held annually across four days during the first weekend of August. The festival dates back to at least 1615, when historical records confirm the solemn translation of the saint's relics from the cathedral of Cagliari back to his sanctuary in the Linas countryside.
On Friday evening, the sacred silver reliquary of San Sisinnio departs the parish church of Santa Barbara in the centre of Villacidro, accompanied by hundreds of costumed pilgrims, folk dancers playing ancient accordion rhythms, and a cavalcade of over one hundred decorated Sardinian horses and riders. The procession travels four kilometres into the countryside to the rural church in the millennial olive grove of San Sisinnio.
For the following three days, the olive grove transforms into an authentic communal camp. Families roast suckling pig (porceddu) and mutton over open wood fires beneath the ancient trees, while cantadores perform traditional Sardinian polyphonic poetry competitions into the early hours of the morning. On Monday evening, the saint returns to Villacidro under a magnificent fireworks display.
2. Sagra delle Ciliegie: The June Cherry Fair
Villacidro is widely celebrated throughout Sardinia as the Città delle Ciliegie (City of Cherries). Benefiting from cool mountain mountain water runoff and fertile volcanic soils, the orchards flanking Rio Leni and Rio Coxinas produce some of the sweetest, firmest cherries in Italy.
Held each year during the first or second weekend of June, the Sagra delle Ciliegie draws thousands of visitors to the streets of Villacidro. Local agricultural cooperatives display overflowing wooden crates of freshly picked cherry varietals, including the prized Ciliegia di Villacidro, alongside cherry jams, tarts, artisanal cherry-infused grappas, and the famous yellow herbal liqueur Liquore Villacidro Murgia.
3. Premio Letterario Giuseppe Dessì (September)
Every September, the town of Villacidro steps onto the national cultural stage with the Premio Letterario Giuseppe Dessì. Established in 1986 to honor the legacy of author Giuseppe Dessì, the national literary competition attracts Italy's most prominent contemporary novelists, poets, and essayists.
The week-long festival hosts public book readings, theatrical adaptations, roundtables on Mediterranean cultural identity, and open-air classical concerts held at the historic Lavatoio Liberty and in the courtyard of Casa Dessì.
4. Festa di Santa Barbara & Mining Heritage (December)
On December 4th, the community of Villacidro honors Saint Barbara, the patron protector of miners, geologists, and artillerymen. For more than a century, the surrounding mountains of Monte Linas were intensely mined for zinc, lead, and silver, particularly at the nearby Canale Serci and Gennamari extraction basins.
The celebration unites retired miners, forestry officers, and local civic societies in a solemn procession through the old quarters. Commemorative masses are followed by choral concerts of traditional Sardinian tenores singing ancient sacred hymns, and the lighting of festive bonfires in village squares where roasted chestnuts and newly pressed autumn Cannonau wines are shared freely with visitors.
